Could simple yeast be the future of medical marijuana? Some biochemists at the Technical University in Dortmund seem to think so. They have successfully mass-produced THC and cannabinoids without resorting to the hemp plant. Instead, using genetically engineered yeast strains, they’ve opened the door to subsequent yeast factories that could produce beneficial marijuana compounds. While the cannabis plant still produces THC and cannabinoids much more efficiently at this point, cultivation in the laboratory is a big step especially for researchers who will now have easier access to study these molecular compounds to verify the many curative claims attributed to medical marijuana.
